Title:System Engineering Perspectives on 6G

Date/Time/Venue: 19th Nov 2024 / 15:00 PM - 15:30 PM / Anand Swaroop Auditorium, Block 45

Abstract: Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that ensures the successful design, integration, and management of complex systems throughout their life cycle. Cellular systems are ubiquitous and are used for transmitting voice, data and video between users around the world. 6G will be the next generation cellular system which will ensure end-to-end extremely low latency and large bandwidth to support new applications like Robotic surgery, 3D connectivity and personalized holograms. These will be complicated, heterogenous, distributed systems. Systems engineering in 6G will ensure that the development and deployment of this advanced network are systematic, efficient, secure and adaptable to future technological advancements and user needs. Systems engineering facilitates communication among various stakeholders, including network operators, hardware manufacturers, and policymakers, fostering a collaborative environment essential for 6G’s success. Managing such complex, communication, and data sharing between independently managed 6G systems using systems engineering approach is of immense importance. Once the requirements for design and development of 6G network are defined, the entire system can be broken down into its subsystems and the interfaces can be defined between each of these subsystems. The systems requirements can be traced to each of these subsystems. The architecture of the systems and subsystems can be defined using System Engineering Tools such as Rhapsody or using UML. Finally, these subsystems get integrated and each requirement gets verified and validated to ensure that the system is built to perform based on the requirements. One of the potential applications of 6G in defence would be of surveillance using a swarm of Drones/UAVs having different sensors mounted on them. The information from each of these drones in the form of data, images, vidoes etc processed in real time, with low latency can be communication to ground command centres for decision making. Decisions shall be made autonomously and efficiently using AI enabled 6G with inbuilt security features. From the point of view of Systems/Systems Engineering panel of Aeronautics and Research Development Board, DRDO, the state of art, 6G technology for futuristic strategic applications in communication and network centric warfare need to be explored.
